Fresh Ideas: Our Favourite Accessible Activities in Launceston

Are you a seasoned disability support worker in Launceston who feels like you and your participants have ‘done it all’ in town? Or maybe you’re a new support worker who doesn’t know where to start when it comes to getting out and about. We’ve been there!

As one of the oldest registered disability support providers in Launceston, the Enriched Care team have been doing this for a while. So here’s four of our favourite accessible activities in Launceston for you and your participant to do this week!

INVERESK URBAN REALM

1)     FREE FUN: Inveresk ‘Urban Realm’ (2 Invermay Road, Invermay)

Located on the UTAS Invermay Campus, the ‘Urban Realm’ is an outdoor space that’s open to the public. This outdoor space connects surrounding amenities and activities.

WE LOVE:

  • The Community Food Garden, open to everyone to use. It has high garden beds and wide paths; perfect for accessibility.

  • The Esk Activity Space; including two multipurpose playing surface courts, a running track, table tennis, bouldering wall and timber seating.

  • Ample disability parking spaces, wheelchair accessibility and accessible toilets.

  • The showcase of Aboriginal knowledge and community, displayed in the beautiful landscaping.

  • Ramped access to ‘The Spine’, a walking bridge and path that takes you straight to Launceston, Seaport and more!

  • The wide range of adjoining community spaces and cafes like the Queen Victoria Museum, The Tramsheds and Blue Inc Café.

2)    FOR FOODIES: Harvest Launceston Community Farmers Market (71 Cimitiere St, Launceston)

Every Saturday from 8.30am – 12.30pm, pop to the Harvest Markets to experience some of Launnie’s best cheese, bread, meat, honey, fresh produce, live music and hot coffee (and so much more)!

WE LOVE:

  • You can make it what you want! Shop your groceries for the week, enjoy a hot chocolate and croissant, or just listen to the live music. Why not head over to City Park when you’re done?

  • Disability parking and front-gate drop-off available. Wheelchair accessible and accessible toilets.

  • Assistance Dogs welcome.

3)    GET SOCIAL: Reclink Launceston Activities Calendar

We couldn’t NOT shout out the wonderful people at Reclink. If you’ve got an interest, Reclink probably has a group for that! They currently run a calendar of activities almost every day of the week ranging from tennis, to sailing, to archery, to art groups… check out the full calendar here.

WE LOVE:

  • It’s totally organized for you! Just RSVP and turn up on the day.

  • You’ll meet like-minded people on a regular basis and may even make friends for life!

  • All accessibility considerations are taken, so you can be assured you’re fully welcome.

  • You can become an expert at your skill or try something totally new.

CATARACT GORGE CRUISE

4)    SOMETHING SPECIAL: Cataract Gorge Cruise

If you’ve got some money to spend, jump onboard a Tamar River Cruise to take in Tamar Island, Cataract Gorge and Batman Bridge.

WE LOVE:

  • A fully accessible way to take in some of Launceston’s famous landmarks that are otherwise tricky to get to!

  • Food and drinks included in ticket (including catering for dietary requirements).

  • Ample disability parking spaces at the port, with wheelchair accessibility and accessible toilets onboard.

  • Assistance Dogs welcome.

This really only scratches the surface of activities available in Launceston. Keep an eye on the blog for more recommendations soon!
